Vocal Release Online Review

Vocal Release Product ShotOur review of the Vocal Release course was more difficult than the others, because the only poor ratings it earned are for presentation. The quality of the material and knowledge of the instructor is good, but unfortunately the "old school" production value is not.

It's important to note that this course does include some unique techniques not taught in the others, most of which are variations of existing breathing styles and tone adjustments.

While it is a decent choice, many users reported Eric's inability to hit notes himself as frustrating. Singing Success is a better course.

"Good Content, Poor Quality"

Eric Frey is a well-qualified instructor, and Vocal Release shows his extensive knowledge about the human voice.

That said, the organization and low production quality of his course takes quite a bit away from its value, in our opinion.

Vocal Release Online comes with the following:

  • 7 CDs (MP3 downloads)
  • 347 page PDF

The strongest point of this program is the unique perspective an intermediate-level singer can gain from Eric's techniques.

His unique approach to pushing the voice to new levels work well, if you already have a solid foundation in your learning. Because of this fact, we do not recommend this course for complete beginners.

While a beginner could probably pick up some helpful tips & exercises from this course, it's better suited for a singer with enough experience to understand these unique learning styles.

Pros of Vocal Release Online

It received our lowest overall rating, but Vocal Release does have its pros:

  1. Instant Access: While it's not as high-quality as Singorama, we do appreciate the convenience of being able to download the entire course to your computer. (High-speed Internet connection is strongly recommended.)

  2. Price: $97 is less than the price of 5-7 private lessons, which is nice.

  3. Knowledgeable Instructor: Eric Frey has a good amount of technical knowledge to teach.

Cons of Vocal Release Online

These are the reasons we rated Vocal Release so much lower than the other options:

  1. Off-Pitch: Eric, the teacher, cannot sing on pitch! This caused us to lose a great deal of respect for this course.

  2. Boredom: Though his techniques are unique and helpful, he presents them in more of a dry, textbook format than the other lessons, making it much less entertaining.

  3. Low Quality: The production quality of his website speaks volumes for how his entire course is delivered.

If you are specifically looking for a great downloadable course to save money, we recommend Singorama instead.

About Eric Frey, Creator of "Vocal Release"

Eric Frey photoEric Frey is a technically-proficient singer who has spent over 22 years researching and learning the anatomical and physical elements of singing.

He claims to have to "have almost every book on the subject ever published", which shows how serious he is about absorbing everything he can.

While his knowledge is sound, many customers have complained that he is tone deaf. This is probably an overstatement, but the poor quality of some of the audio lessons in Vocal Release do suggest that he is qualified to teach singing only from a conceptual perspective.

User Reviews of Vocal Release Online

1 star "Poor quality"
By David on September 25th, 2008. Found on Reviewica.

"You spend $97.00 to receive a poor quality recording with a man claiming to be an amazing singer and instructor who actually sings off pitch and with falsetto almost the entire time."

1.5 stars "...it was bad."
By Tom on September 3, 2008. Found on Reviewica.

"He doesn't really know how the singing voice really works and instead starts blaming other programs saying his method is the only one, which is actually the one that will get your voice damaged.

Tried this one, it was bad. Try Singing Success instead, much better and made by a real vocal coach."

In summary, Eric's course has a lot of technical and conceptual information, but if you're looking for a good all around singing lesson experience, we recommend Singing Success.

If you'd rather not invest $200, or you'd still prefer a completely digital program, Singorama is also a great choice. To learn more about Vocal Release, click below:
